Mumbai, (EMS). The Santa Cruz-Chembur Link Road, connecting the Eastern and Western Expressways in Mumbai, will be extended up to LBS Junction. This project has been approved by Mumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner/Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal and work will be started soon after issuing the government order. But five big commercial constructions are hindering this expansion.
Discussions are currently going on at the ward level regarding the removal of these constructions. The work of Link Road is with MMRDA, while the work of LBS Extension is with Mumbai Municipal Corporation. The bridge constructed from MTNL Junction on BKC merges with the existing bridge on Santa Cruz-Chembur Link Road about 100 meters before LBS Junction. Locals were demanding that the bridge built by MMRDA be extended to LBS Road and connected to the road leading to Ghatkopar. Construction of the proposed bridge will facilitate the vehicles coming from BKC to go to Ghatkopar via LBS, avoiding three signals. Besides this, time and fuel will also be saved.
According to this, Municipal Corporation will do the expansion work. Tender has been issued for this and the cost is estimated to be Rs 36 crore 48 lakh. Before starting this work, approval from Municipal Corporation Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal is necessary and such a proposal was sent to him. After which the draft proposal has been approved.
However, five big commercial buildings which are becoming a hindrance in this expansion work have to be shifted to another place. Expansion is possible only after completing this process. Action for this will be taken from Kurla L ward of Municipal Corporation. Sources said that this is also being discussed at the ward level. This work will be done in 24 months except monsoon.
- 90 percent work completed
The Santa Cruz-Chembur Link Road was started by MMRDA in 2014 to connect the two expressways, which carry a significant portion of Mumbai’s traffic, in a non-stop, signal-free manner. The route starts from Vakola in the west and ends at Amar Mahal Junction in Chembur. The flyover between BKC and LBS is important on this route. It starts near MTNL exchange in BKC and ends near LBS Marg. Although 90 percent of the work on this link road has been completed, the widening work is still pending.
