Chennai, Dec 12 (PTI) Tamil Nadu on Sunday requested the Center to allow starting a new course on diabetology, nutrition and ‘metabolism’ with an aim to increase the number of professional healthcare providers in the country. Health and Family Welfare Minister M. Subramaniam, in a letter to Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, said that Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder, which increases the health expenditure of both the government and the individual. “The introduction of an MD (Diabetes, Nutrition and Metabolism) course will increase the number of health care providers in the region. This will help in the successful implementation of the State and Central Government’s policy of setting up Diabetes Care Units in Health Care Centers in the State and the country.
