Dr. Animesh Sinha, Senior Scientist of the Division of Genetics and Tree Improvement in the Forest Producer Institute, Ranchi, said that suicide tree is mainly found in the forests located in the coastal area of the sea. Research and research are going on continuously about how this wild and toxic tree can be used for the welfare of mankind. In recent times, the fruit of this tree has been successful in making anti-cancer activity, diagnosing skin diseases, constipation and other anti-bacterial medicines. Apart from this, it is also reported that in Sri Lanka it is used to light a lamp and drive away mosquitoes and other insecticides.
Research on Medical Use
At the same time, many countries around the world have also developed the technology to make biodiesel from the suicide tree. Scientists from Indonesia and Taiwan have succeeded in making biodiesel. In the country too, many research and research works are going on for its medicinal use, due to which the plants of ‘Susite Tree’ have been brought here from Bhitarkanika and Sundarbans area of Odisha and used in its conservation and welfare of mankind. The works are going on. While most of the area of Sundarbans falls in Bangladesh, there too many types of medicines are made from its fruit.
Technical officer working in Forest Productivity Institute A. Sarkar and D. Banerjee also say that the existence of many plants of Cerbera odollum species is under threat due to rising water level in the forest areas located in the sea area. For this reason, more than a dozen wild plant species from Andaman-Nicobar group and other places including Odisha are being brought to the institute and research work is being done for its conservation and development.
Soil of Jharkhand suitable for production
In Ranchi-based Forest Productivity Institute, success has been achieved in developing various plants of Cerbera odollum species and preparing new saplings and it is believed that the soil of Jharkhand is also suitable for their production.
