People will now be able to buy CovaShield and Covaxin from hospitals and clinics but vaccination data will have to be updated on Co-Vin.
The Drug Controller General of India on Thursday approved the sale of Kovaxin and Kovishield, both these Covid vaccines, in the market. This means that now both these vaccines will be available in the regular market. However, market approval does not mean that the vaccine will be available at medical stores. People have to buy Covishield and Covaxin from hospitals and clinics.
Earlier, it was reported that the center was planning to cap the price of vaccines at ₹275 per dose and additional service charges up to ₹150. Directed the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) to initiate the work towards capping the prices to make both these vaccines affordable to the general public.
As of now, the cost of Covaccine is Rs 1,200 per dose, while the cost of a single dose of Covishield is Rs 780 in private hospitals. Prices also include a service charge of Rs.150. At present, both vaccines are given for emergency use only in the country.

Earlier, on 25 October last year, Prakash Kumar Singh, director of Serum Institute of India, had given an application to the Government of India. In which approval was sought to launch the Kovishield vaccine in the market. Then a few weeks ago, Bharat Biotech director V Krishna Mohan submitted full details of chemistry, formulation and control along with clinical data, seeking routine approval for the vaccine.
