New Delhi, (Hindustan Times). After his successful visit to Japan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for Papua New Guinea on the second leg of his three nation tour. This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Papua New Guinea. This information was given by the spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Arindam Bagchi.
Bagchi informed that Prime Minister Modi concluded his visit to Japan after two days of intense bilateral and multilateral engagement with key partners in Hiroshima. The Prime Minister will now reach Port Moresby on the next leg of his visit. There he will be received by the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea. Here he will be given a full formal welcome. Normally, the country does not formally welcome any leader who arrives after sunset, but as a special exception for Prime Minister Modi, he will be accorded a full ceremonial reception.
Prime Minister Modi will jointly host the 3rd Summit of the India-Pacific Islands Cooperation Forum on May 22 in Port Moresby with James Marape, the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea. Prime Minister Modi will have bilateral programs in Papua New Guinea. This includes meetings with Governor-General Sir Bob Dade and Prime Minister James Marpe.
It is noteworthy that this forum, launched in 2014, includes India and 14 Pacific island countries. That is, it includes Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Samoa, Vanuatu, Niue, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, the Cook Islands, Palau, Nauru and the Solomon Islands.
