Sources said that in view of the growing protests against his return to the state Congress, Harak Singh has approached the top party leaders in Delhi to present his case. However, the sources did not specify which leaders Harak Singh had contacted. He told that during the meeting with top leaders, Harak Singh has assured to get five to 10 seats for the party under his influence.
Sources said that till now there is no indication from the Congress high command to include Harak Singh in the party.
On the other hand, after Harish Rawat opposed Harak Singh’s return to Congress, many leaders of Rawat’s supporters have also started speaking out in protest.
Harish Rawat, while interacting with reporters, indicated several times that he was not comfortable with the return of Harak Singh and other rebels to the Congress. He clarified that the rebellion against his government in 2016 was not against Harish Rawat but against democracy and Uttarakhand.
Significantly, Harak Singh was also one of the 10 Congress MLAs who revolted against the then Harish Rawat government. After the rebellion, President’s rule was imposed in the state.
Rajya Sabha member Pradeep Tamta, a close aide of Rawat, said the public would find it difficult to answer if the people who had murdered democracy as part of a conspiracy in 2016 were taken back in the party. Emphasizing on keeping such people away from the party, he said that what is the guarantee that sinners who once killed democracy will not repeat that act again?
Congress MLA from Kedarnath Manoj Rawat also called Harak Singh a “killer of democracy” and said senior party leaders should think carefully whether such people should be taken into the party or not.
