In fact, the Army’s Function and Welfare Directorate, under the Army’s Adjutant General’s Branch, had written a letter to all command headquarters in May this year, recommending the soldiers to make good use of their leaves and contribute to nation building. It was advised in the letter that every soldier going on leave should choose any topic based on his interest and the need of his local community and involve the local people in his campaign by making personal contribution. Besides, it was also asked to give feedback every three months on the campaigns run.

In the correspondence with all the command headquarters, it was said that the soldiers can make better use of their holidays by getting involved in social causes and contributing to nation building. The soldiers themselves can choose government schemes for promotion. Although no official order has been issued by the Army after this recommendation letter, the Army is suggesting its soldiers to participate in social activities during the holidays. During the holidays, Army soldiers will give information to the people about government schemes in their area. Will inform them about schemes like ‘Clean India Campaign’ and ‘Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan’.

In fact, such an experiment has already been done with the central paramilitary forces ‘CAPF’. Central Armed Police Forces personnel were also given similar duties. The CAPFs have been asked to collect detailed historical information in the geographical area in which they are deployed. Apart from their duty, the soldiers will also document the history of the place. Now preparations are underway to repeat the same experiment with Indian Army soldiers. However, the Army letter also mentions how the soldiers, who often serve under difficult conditions, will have ample time to indulge in such social activities during leave. The purpose of giving leave to army personnel is to allow them to spend time with their families and complete family household work.

An army officer says that there is nothing wrong in social service, provided the soldiers participate in it in their own way. Be it army or central paramilitary forces, holidays are very important for everyone. When a soldier gets free time from rigorous duty, he has a long list of household tasks ready for him. Since he goes home after several months, he also has family responsibilities. After the recruitment of Agniveer in the army, the soldiers will get only 30 days leave in a year.
