Toronto (HS). Canada issues new travel advisory to its citizens In India, it has asked them to ‘remain vigilant and exercise caution’ in the context of recent developments, as calls for protests and some ‘negative sentiment’ against Canada continue on social media.
Tensions between India and Canada escalated after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made very serious allegations regarding the ‘possible’ involvement of Indian spies in the killing of 45-year-old Khalistani separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia on June 18. India had declared Nijjar a terrorist in 2020.
India rejected the allegations as ‘absurd’ and (maliciously) motivated’ and expelled a senior Canadian diplomat in retaliation for the expulsion of an Indian diplomat over the matter.
“In the context of recent developments in Canada and India, there have been calls for protests and some negative sentiment towards Canada on social media,” the Canadian government said in an update on Sunday. Please be alert and take precautions.
According to Global News report, this decision comes after India issued a similar advisory for Indian citizens and students living in Canada and halted visa services late last week.
