Meerut, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Akhilesh Mohan said, on Monday, under the National Tobacco Control Program, the district level enforcement team raided around Abulen Plaza, Sadar Bazar as part of the tobacco-free campaign. All tobacco vendors were given detailed information about the sections of the COTPA-2003 Act. Along with this, packets of cigarettes and tobacco products were checked at all the shops according to Section-7 of the COTPA-2003 Act.
On Monday, officials of various departments involved in the enforcement program conducted raids around Abulen, Sadar Bazar and found that some shops were selling tobacco without statutory warnings. Some shopkeepers are selling tobacco products to children below 18 years of age. Along with warning them, a large quantity of cigarettes and other tobacco products were destroyed on the spot and a fine of about Rs. 4,000/- was also recovered from them. Along with this, all the shopkeepers were also asked not to sell tobacco products without statutory warning in future and also to install boards on shops not to give tobacco products to children below 18 years of age. In the process of vendor licensing, they were also informed about not selling food and non-food products together and about the licensing process. District Advisor Mohit Bhardwaj from Health Department, District Tobacco Control Cell, Shelendra Kumar from Commercial Tax Department, KP Singh Rathor, Brajesh Kumar, Krishan Kumar from Police Crime Department, Narendra Kumar from Education Department and Sunit Kumar from Municipal Corporation Department were present in the programme.
