After overseeing the initiative to draw rain water from several flooded areas using large motors, Stalin accused the erstwhile AIADMK government in the state of not taking appropriate steps to strengthen infrastructure and prevent water logging.
Expressing confidence of resolving water logging issues before the next rainy season, the Chief Minister said that the Meteorological Department usually provides information (to the government) on the probability of rain. However, they (meteorological department) could not predict heavy rains in Chennai on December 30 and it was unexpected, he told reporters.
To a question on whether there was any problem in providing the weather forecast and whether the state government would submit a representation to the Center for replacement of equipment at the IMD regional center here, he said it was the job of the central government. “However, when you have raised this matter, the Tamil Nadu government will remind the Center about it,” he said.
He said that many areas of Chennai received more than 20 cm of rain on Thursday.
Asked about Stalin’s remarks, an IMD (Chennai) official told PTI that it is not always possible to provide 100 per cent error-free forecasts, given the many technical and practical difficulties.
