Meerut: BJP engaged in making its mayor for the third time
Meerut (Hindustan Times). Only BJP candidate is yet to be announced for the post of Mayor in Meerut Municipal Corporation. All other parties have declared their candidates. The BJP is trying to make its candidate win for the third time on the post of mayor. That’s why intense brainstorming is going on regarding the candidate.
Polling will be held in the second phase for mayor and 90 councilors in Meerut Municipal Corporation, Nagar Palika Parishad and Nagar Panchayats. Enrollment process is going on for this. All parties except BJP have announced their candidates. The SP has fielded Seema Pradhan from the Gujjar community, Hashmat Malik from the Teli Muslim community, Hashmat Malik from the BSP, Richa Singh from the Jat community and the Congress from Naseem Qureshi from the Butcher community. Now all parties are eyeing the announcement of BJP candidate. It is being told that the BJP will declare its candidate by the night of 21 April. Former mayor Harikant Ahluwalia and former vice-president of the Cantt Board Veena Wadhwa are frontrunners in the race to get tickets from the BJP. Harikant Ahluwalia comes from the Kalal sub-caste of Punjabi society. Along with this, his wife is from Rastogi community and daughter-in-law is a Jat. While Veena Wadhwa comes from Jat society and her in-laws are in Punjabi society. Apart from this, other contenders for BJP ticket are Manoj Poswal from Gurjar Samaj, Vinay Pradhan, Naresh Gurjar, Narendra Upadhyay from Jogi Samaj. Sachin Sirohi, Dr. Virottam Tomar, Dr. Tanuraj Sirohi are included from the Jat community. Sachin Prajapati from the Prajapati fraternity is also among the contenders.
BSP has won thrice and BJP twice
For the first time in 1995, after the formation of Meerut Municipal Corporation, elections were held for the post of Mayor. At that time Ayub Ansari of BSP had won. While in the elections held in 2000, Shahid Akhlaq of BSP got success in becoming the mayor. In 2006 Madhu Gurjar of BJP and in 2012 Harikant Ahluwalia of BJP were successful in winning the election. In 2017 again BSP won. BSP’s Sunita Verma defeated BJP’s Kanta Kardam. Now the BSP is preparing to make its mayor for the fourth time, while the BJP is eyeing to win the mayor’s election for the third time.
SP and Congress’s account has not been opened till date
A senior journalist says that the Meerut Municipal Corporation has so far proved to be a desert for the Samajwadi Party and the Congress. No candidate from both the parties has been able to win the post of mayor. In the discussions at the local level, this time SP candidate Seema Pradhan is considered to be a strong contender for victory, while Congress candidate Naseem Qureshi is also expressing hope of victory.
