People living in cities want to do good gardening in their homes. But for them the problem is space. Many people do not have enough space in the house to plant trees. People living in metropolitan cities can hardly get a roof, even a balcony. Many times the balcony is so small that people cannot think of keeping big pots in it. For such people, The Better India has only one advice and that is wall, which means vertical gardening.
Swati Dwivedi, who is doing gardening at her home in Bangalore, says that if someone wants to do gardening, then even a wall is enough for them. You can do ‘Vertical Gardening’ on any wall of your house. You can do ‘Vertical Gardening’ in different ways depending on the available space in your home. Just as someone sets up the pots directly in the wall, some people make a stand and place small pots on it. Those who can keep their budget a little more, they can also setup hydroponic.
In recent times, the trend of vertical garden has increased not only in homes but also in public places. There are different ways you can fill any deserted wall with greenery. Says Swati, “Setting up a vertical garden does not take much effort. Many people make their own stand etc. according to their need, while many people buy pre-prepared vertical garden setup from e-commerce website. Whatever kind of setup you do, there are some basic things that you should always keep in mind.”
Plant a vertical garden like this
- Put the pots on the grill:
Swati says that if you already have grills in your balcony or if there is a place where there is a big grill, then you will not have to spend much. For this you just have to take hooked pots. You will find many small pots for vertical gardens, which already come with a hook or handle. With its help, you can put them on the grill. Buy pots according to the length and width of your grill.
“If you are taking small plastic pots, then you should get them at Rs 20/pot. Although this price may vary depending on the locality,” he said.
- Can be made of iron or wooden frame:

He further said that if you have enough space that you can keep a wooden stand, then you can also invest in the stand. By making a wooden stand according to your need, you can put pots in it. You can also take small pots of clay or ceramic for the wooden stand. The cost of these pots will cost you from Rs 20 to Rs 100. Maybe designer pots from ceramics will cost you more. But you can decide according to your budget.
Similarly, if you want, you can also make an iron frame. Swati says that this frame has thick iron strips all around and the middle of this panel is made of mesh with thin iron wires. You can get this frame fitted on your balcony or any other wall of the house. After making the frame, you should choose such pots, which can be easily planted on this frame after planting.
Swati says, “If you are making a wooden or iron frame yourself, then you can make it according to the length and width of the wall. This will cost you accordingly, the bigger you make the frame. However, according to me, a basic setup will cost you Rs 500 to Rs 1000.
- Vertical Garden Setup You Can Buy Online:

Swati says that if someone does not want to get the setup done by themselves, then they can also buy ready-made setups from places like Amazon or Flipkart. A small setup will cost you Rs 1000 to Rs 1200. A manual comes with the package to set up what you find online. With the help of which you can setup your own. The specialty of this setup is that you can put it in different places. Like some days you put it on a grill and some days hang it on your door. However, for this you have to see where it is possible to put in your home.
- Hydroponics is also a good way
People with less space can also adopt hydroponics. But for this technique you need good training. Hydroponics expert Anil Thadani says, “You can get a good hydroponic system built in nine-ten thousand. But in a hydroponic system, you have to provide good nutrition so that the plants grow well.”

Also, install a system in which the flow of water is good. According to your system, you can also plant plants in it like lettuce, tomato, green chili, strawberry etc. Anil says that you need a little more budget for hydroponic and before investing it is better that you learn the depth of this technique. Because if you have your mind then it will not take you much time to learn it and vegetables or salads grown with hydroponic technology are the best in terms of nutrition.
Keep these things in mind:
Swati says that not only the setup of the vertical garden, but what kind of potting mix you make, what plants you plant, it is also important to pay attention to these things.
- Use as much cocopeat and compost for the potting mix.
- Plant such plants together that require equal sunlight and temperature.
- Choose a place that is protected from rain. But it should get enough sunlight.
- Water regularly as the pots are small and do not retain moisture for long.
- Plant according to where you are setting up the garden. Take special care of indoor and outdoor.
- Always plant plants that do not grow much.
- On whichever wall you are setting up the vertical garden, you can first put a plastic sheet on it so that there is no dampness.
Happy Gardening!
