A statement issued by Manipur Legislative Assembly Secretary K Meghjit Singh said that the Speaker has expressed happiness in accepting the merger of 5 JDU MLAs with BJP under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution. Since the number of defection legislators is more than two-thirds, it will be considered valid.
MLAs joining BJP
JDU had fielded candidates on 38 seats in the assembly elections in March this year, out of which six won. The JD(U) MLAs who joined the BJP include KH Joykishan, N Sanate, Mohammad Achhabuddin, former Director General of Police A M Khoute and Thangjam Arunkumar.
Khaute and Arunkumar had demanded ticket from BJP in the assembly elections, but after not getting success, both joined JDU.
Breach of BJP in Arunachal
This is the second time that the BJP has targeted Nitish Kumar’s party in the Northeast for the second time. Earlier in 2020, 6 out of 7 MLAs had joined BJP in Arunachal Pradesh and last week the lone MLA also joined hands with BJP.
