‘Inappropriate billing with incomplete inputs’
The governor sent the bill back. Returning this, the Governor also remarked that the Bill was sent with incomplete inputs which is unfair. Now after the withdrawal of this bill, another front of the governor has opened up with the state government.
Controversy over RBU Vice Chancellor
West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has courted yet another controversy by nominating the next Vice Chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University (RBU). A bill to nominate Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as the Chancellor of state-run universities has been passed by the Assembly and the Governor has not approved it. The governor is presently the ex-officio chancellor of state-run universities and the term of RBU’s current vice-chancellor, Sabyasachi Basu Roy Chowdhury, is about to end soon.
Dhankhar has appointed Professor Mahua Mukherjee in the dance department of RBU as the next vice-chancellor. He tweeted that he has appointed Mukharti as the next Vice Chancellor under Section 9(1)(b) of the Rabindra Bharati Act, 1981. The governor also attached the recommendation of the government’s search committee for the post and said he was selecting Mukherjee, whose name topped the list.
State spokesperson of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) Kunal Ghosh reacted sharply to this saying that the governor has once again proved that he does not believe in democratic principles and federalism. The bill passed by the West Bengal Assembly to appoint the Chief Minister to the post of Chancellor of the state universities is awaiting his approval. Hon’ble Governor has unilaterally announced one name as Vice Chancellor of RBU. He did not even consider it necessary to take the Education Minister and the Chief Minister into confidence before this announcement.
