The West Bengal Chief Minister on Wednesday said that everyone in the RSS is “not bad” and there are many people in it who do not support the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), Congress and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) have criticized Mamata for her remarks, while the BJP said it does not need a certificate from her (Mamata).
Instead of commenting on its appreciation, the RSS referred to Bengal’s record of political violence and called for corrective measures.
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi hit out at Mamata for her remarks. Owaisi said on Thursday that “in 2003 also he had called the RSS a ‘deshbhakt’ and in return the RSS had called her (Goddess) Durga”.
Taking a jibe at Mamata, Owaisi said, “Hope the Muslim face of TMC will appreciate her for her honesty and consistency in her stand.”
The Trinamool Congress, however, tried to downplay Owaisi’s remarks, saying the party does not need to prove its secular character to him.
TMC MP Saugata Rai said, “We do not need to prove anything to Owaisi. Mamata Banerjee has tried to say that there are good and bad people in every organization.
Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury told PTI, “This is not the first time she (Mamata) has praised the RSS.
He referred to 2003, when “she (Mamata) participated in a book release program of the RSS. He had sought its support to topple the then Left Front government in the state. ,
Choudhary claimed that Mamata has expressed her gratitude to the RSS in the past as well. “Sometimes she woos Hindu conservatives and sometimes Muslims to gain electoral benefits. Mamta was exposed once again.
“The RSS is not that bad,” Mamata remarked at an event at the state secretariat on Wednesday. There are still people in the RSS who do not support the policies of the BJP. ,
The CPI(M) also criticized Mamata for her remarks. Sujan Chakraborty, a member of the party’s central committee, claimed that her remarks supported the Left’s stand that she belonged to the RSS.
RSS state general secretary Jishnu Basu said, “She (Mamata) has said that there are some good people in the RSS. We would like to tell them that there can be political differences but it does not mean involving (political workers) in killing opponents.
Basu claimed that around 60 people were killed in incidents of post-poll violence in the state.
“They should maintain law and order. He is the Chief Minister of those who voted for him and those who did not. ,
BJP national vice president Dilip Ghosh said that neither the RSS nor the BJP needs a certificate from Mamta.
