Babu Bhai Parmar of Gujarat was only nine years old when he touched a bare electric wire in the field and lost both his hands in the accident. Babu Bhai’s father used to work in the fields of others in Patan (Gujarat). That’s why Babu Bhai wanted him to do some good work by studying and writing. After losing both hands, he used to go to the government school in the village, but could not write anything.
Some years of life went by like this. As time passed, he realized that nothing would happen if he just sat down.
He says, “After I lost both my hands, I knew that I would not be able to live a dignified life if I did not study. So I started writing with a pencil in my mouth. After some time I got used to it.”
He started writing by pressing the pen in his mouth. However, without any training, this task was not so easy. But he says, ‘Where there is a will there is a way’. Babu Bhai learned to write with this new technique. His father also understood his urge to study and got him admitted to a Divyang school in Kadi town of Gujarat.

In this school, he completed his studies till class X and later did a two-year teacher’s training course. Babu Bhai told that he always wanted to be a teacher. After teachers training, he started tutoring some children at home by staying in Ahmedabad. He got married in the year 2003 and started living in Ahmedabad. Teaching some children at home was not earning much. In such a situation, after the opening of coaching centers all around, then their work got reduced at all.
Babu Bhai says, “Even my wife cannot see with one eye. When my work was reduced, my wife also took up cleaning work in the school and thus we were running our household.”
Babu Bhai used to visit a Shiva temple every day. Then Amrish Ojha, a social worker of the city, called him one day and asked, brother, what work do you do? Babu Bhai told them, “I am a teacher, but I am not getting work due to lack of space for tuition classes.”
After this, it was through Amrish Bhai that he got in touch with Dinesh Bhai Patel, who was running a school for poor children under the name ‘Chayado’. Babu Bhai started the work of teaching children on Sindhu Bhawan Road in Ahmedabad for about 2000 rupees. He used to travel in a bus about seven km away and go to teach the children.
In the year 2012, his school collapsed due to construction and again Babu Bhai had no work. During that time, he used to teach some children nearby. But if a person is willing to work hard, he gets the job.
Got the job of teaching poor children
A resident of Ahmedabad, Sweety Bhalla had been working for poor children for years and she wanted to do some work for the children’s education as well.
Sweety says, “I could not take time off from my work to teach the children, so I asked many people if anyone could teach these children? Then I came to know of Babu Bhai through Ahmedabad Lions Club. Babu Bhai used to teach poor children earlier also, so he agreed quickly.
He is teaching about 10 children till now, for which Sweety also gives him six thousand rupees a month.
Babu Bhai’s daughter is currently studying in 11th standard. He wants his daughter to get a government job in future.
Moreover, Babu Bhai has not stopped dreaming for himself as well. He says, “If I get some funds, then I will make a small room for these poor children and do the work of teaching there. Currently, I am teaching in the vacant space outside the crematorium.”
