CSE’s executive director Anumita Roy Chowdhury says that due to the increase in ozone gas, Delhi’s air remained toxic even during the summer season. It is not that no steps are being taken to reduce pollution. The use of coal has been completely banned in the industrial area of Delhi, but it is important to understand that due to the increase in ozone gas, the level of pollution inside Delhi will increase further.
increased awareness than before
Awareness has increased than before, people are talking openly on this subject. It is necessary that the number of public transport in Delhi should be increased as soon as possible. People should be made aware to use public transport. Electric vehicles should be promoted on a high level. So that ozone gas can be stopped from increasing. If no strict steps are taken at the earliest, then in the coming time there may be a serious health crisis. Simultaneously, a multi-strategy should be devised to prevent the gas level from rising.
What is ground ozone gas, why is it increasing
Ozone is a gas made up of three atoms of oxygen. It occurs in the earth’s upper level, atmosphere and at ground level. Ozone in the atmosphere is good because it protects us from harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. Which we also know as stratospheric ozone. Whereas ground level ozone is depleted. Because of this, there is a fear of getting various health related diseases. It most affected the elderly and children. Due to this there is a fear of getting diseases related to the respiratory system. Also, it has the greatest effect on patients suffering from asthma. Cars, power plants, industrial boilers, refineries, chemical sources cause ozone pollution due to exposure to sunlight. The reason for this increase is fire in landfill sites, increasing vehicle numbers and lack of public transport.
what does the report say
The geographical spread of ground level ozone pollution in Delhi-NCR during March-April 2022 was the highest for the last four years. It is reported that this time around 16 stations have crossed the daily norm, which is 33 per cent more than in March and April last year. In the year 2020, there was a decrease in the number of ozone stations due to the lockdown. Traffic was reduced due to the lockdown. Because of this, the amount of NO 2 was reduced and ozone began to break down at the ground level after sunset. According to the report, the most impact of ozone gas was seen at the ground level along with New Delhi and South Delhi. The most affected is the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range in South Delhi. After this, JLN Stadium, RK Puram, Nehru Nagar and New Delhi are the most polluted. Greater Noida is the major hotspot outside Delhi.
Small changes can save Delhi from pollution
By making some changes in their lifestyle, Delhi residents can save themselves from pollution. For example, do not use a vehicle to go a short distance. Go on foot or by bicycle. Use public transport to get to the office and other places. Attention should be paid to West Segregation. The waste from the landfill site should be used for road construction, which will gradually reduce the height of the landfill site.
