IAS Ira Singhal, who was the Deputy Commissioner of Delhi, is currently posted in Arunachal Pradesh and is known for her excellent work. But as beautiful as his destination looks today, his journey was full of difficulties. Ira Singhal, a resident of Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, was always fond of reading and writing.
Ira, suffering from a disease called scoliosis, took her early education from Sophia Girls School in Meerut and then came to Delhi for further studies, she did BTech from Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology and then got MBA degree from DU.
Ira had seen curfew many times in his district as a child. She used to hear every time that DM has ordered curfew. Since childhood, he felt that DM has a lot of power and since then he decided that he too has to become an officer. Though people always doubted his ability because of his disability, Ira never let it come in the way of his goal and cleared the UPSC exam thrice.
…when the department did not allow Ira Singhal to join
Ira passed the UPSC exam for the first 2 times, then he was selected for the post of IRS. But the department did not allow him to join because of 62% locomotor disability. Then Ira fought a legal battle against it and won the case in 2014 and became an IRS officer.
But Ira was not going to stop here, she once again took the UPSC exam and topped in 2014 to become the country’s first disabled woman UPSC topper. Along with this, he also fulfilled his dream of becoming an IAS officer.
Today Ira is an inspiration to all those youths like himself who succumb to the troubles and taunts of the society.
