Everyone’s life was affected during the corona pandemic last year. Some lost their jobs, some lost their business. Many people lost their loved ones. But even in these adverse circumstances, many such people came to the fore, who discovered new opportunities of livelihood with their skills during the disaster.
Geeta Salish of Kerala also started the online food business during the lockdown itself. Together with her husband, she started selling pickles and ghee from home last year. Today, after one year, she is selling her products in states like Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
Geeta cannot be seen since childhood. But he has such a skill of cooking, due to which today the magic of the taste of his hands is reaching door to door. Apart from cooking, he is also an expert in swimming and computers.
About seven years ago she used to run a restaurant in Thrissur. However, due to some trouble, he had to close the restaurant.
Started business by selling eggs
Geeta has The Better India Told to Ko, “I can’t see so many people doubt my ability. But my husband encouraged me. Since I had run a restaurant before, I had extensive cooking experience, he gave me the idea of working from home.”
Her husband Salish is a medical representative by profession and supports her in business. Says Salish, “Geeta is a self-reliant woman. From taking orders over the phone to packing the orders, she does all the work herself comfortably. I fully support him.”
Geeta started the egg business after the restaurant was closed. He raised some chickens and quails and started selling their eggs in local shops. But all his eggs could not be sold due to the Covid ban. Geeta says, “I used to get around 100 eggs from the quail every month. When they were not sold, then the thought of making pickle came in my mind and then we made pickle and gave it to the known people. In this way gradually I started getting orders from people.”
Within a few months, he started his own startup called ‘Home to Home’ and stopped selling eggs, started making products like pickles and ghee. Geeta had made an initial investment of three lakh rupees in this business. Now she earns 40 thousand rupees every month from this business.
This product is in high demand
These days, Geeta is selling 10 home-made products including turmeric and date decoction, quail egg pickle, ghee, in which turmeric and date decoction sells the most. This is an immunity booster, which has been made at his house for years. People order this product from almost every state of the country.

Turmeric and date decoction is a traditional Kerala dish, for which fresh turmeric and dates are cooked in a bronze uruli (traditional vessel of Kerala) with coconut milk for about 5 to 6 hours, until the coconut milk Oil was not visible from it. It is a long process. He told that consuming one spoon of it daily is considered very good for health.
Salish told that since a year, he has received many repeat orders online. Most of the customers give information about their products to their friends and relatives. He started this business in August last year, since then his work is going on regularly. Geeta told that when orders started getting more, she hired two more women.

Through various platforms of social media, Geeta is reaching people from pickles to other food items. Now he has also launched his own website. Geeta told that initially she used to take orders only through WhatsApp.

Geeta says, “I cook two kilograms of pickles a day, which are packed in 250 gm boxes. At the same time, ghee is made from 20 to 24 liters of milk. The cost of half a kilogram of ghee is Rs 700, while the cost of each pickle varies. Our most popular product CURCUMEAL sells for Rs.800 per kg.”
