Was the Haiderpura encounter really a police encounter or were some innocent people also killed in it? Questions were raised about this encounter that took place in Srinagar a month and a half ago. Now the SIT probing the matter has given a clean chit to the security forces. SIT says that businessman Altaf Ahmed Butt, who was killed in the firing, was used by Pakistani terrorist as a human shield. The SIT claims that a civilian was killed by the terrorist during the encounter. At the same time, the owner of the building (Altaf Ahmed Butt) and a local terrorist lost their lives in cross firing.
‘Bilal made Altaf a human shield’
Head DIG Sujit Kumar of the SIT probing the encounter said, “Pakistani terrorist Bilal Bhai alias Haider used Altaf Ahmed Butt as a human shield. Apart from the Pakistani terrorist, Altaf was also killed in the encounter. In this encounter, apart from Altaf (48), doctors Mudasir Gul (43) and Aamir Magre were also killed due to bullet injuries. The police claimed that those killed were overground workers working for the terrorists. At the same time, the family of the deceased had alleged that the security forces used these people as human shields.

‘Terrorist Bilal killed Doctor Gul’
After this encounter, the police buried the bodies of all in the absence of family members in Handwara, about 70 km from Haiderpura, the encounter site. DIG Sujit Kumar told in the press conference that Aamir, the third person killed in the firing, has come to know that he used to go to Bandipora continuously. He asked the question that if someone’s family had left that place (Bandipura) in 2008, then what is the point of going there again and again? The SIT said that Amir, an employee of Doctor Gul, was close to Pak terrorist Bilal Bhai and while escaping from the encounter site, Amir lost his life due to firing.
The SIT also said that Altaf Butt’s family could not give a satisfactory answer regarding the tenants residing in the building. Altaf’s niece Saima Butt says that Altaf was the owner of the entire property. In such a situation, only he knew about the rent deed and the mode of payment.

Police repeating old story: PAGD
The Gupkar Manifesto Alliance (PAGD) has reacted to the police’s press conference on the Haiderpura encounter. PGAD says the police claim is a repetition of an old story. The PGAD has demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident. According to him, there is a strong belief of the people that the civilians killed in the incident were not made by the terrorists but by the security forces as human shields.
PAGD spokesperson Mohd Yusuf Tarigami said in a statement, “Today’s press briefing by J&K Police regarding the tragic incident of Hyderpura last month is a repetition of an old story. It does not even present a true picture of this shocking incident.
