Stevia is such a medicinal plant that is playing an important role in relieving dangerous diseases like diabetes and obesity. In the last few years, awareness about this plant has increased a lot. That’s why many farmers are cultivating it today, while many people are growing stevia in pots too.
Stevia is also called ‘sugar plant’ by some people. In local colloquial it is also called ‘sweet basil’ in many places. It is a good natural alternative to sugar. Especially that it is very beneficial for diabetic patients. Its consumption does not increase the sugar level.
It is said that stevia also proves to be very beneficial in high blood pressure, hypertension and acidity. It is also used to make sugar free things. Due to the lack of calories in this plant, due to its consumption, sugar does not increase in the body, due to which weight is controlled. Supreet Raichurkar, who has been using stevia leaves instead of sugar in tea and coffee for the last six-seven months, says that it is very easy to apply stevia at home.
Supreet, a resident of Solapur in Maharashtra, is an automobile engineer by profession, as well as doing gardening. He wants to do stevia farming in future. These days he is growing stevia plants organically in his garden.
Supreet told The Better India, “Stevia is very easy to apply. You can plant it from seed or cuttings. It is easily grown from seeds and does not take much time to grow. Therefore, you can find out about stevia seeds from any seed store near you. Apart from this, you can also plant Stevia in pots and keep it on your patio, balcony or terrace.”
Plant stevia plant like this
Supreet told that first of all you should buy stevia seeds from any shop or online platform. After this, you can use a seedling tray or a small pot to prepare the seedlings from the seeds. But when your plant is ready, you transplant it into a bigger pot so that it gets enough room to grow.
*First of all, to prepare the soil, you can mix dung manure or earthworm manure and sand in the normal garden soil.
Fill this soil in a seedling tray or small pot and sprinkle water on top.
* Now plant stevia seeds in the soil and cover it with some soil from above.
* After sowing the seeds, you can give water once again and now if you want, you can cover any cloth over the pot or seedling tray.
*Keep in mind that until the seeds germinate, do not keep the pot or tray in the sun.
*Keep spraying water regularly.
*It may take 10 to 15 days for the seeds to germinate.
He added that when your seeds germinate and the plant starts growing, you can keep them in the sun. But do not forget to give regular watering. In about a month, your plants will be large enough that you can transplant them into larger pots. After transplanting the plants, once again keep the pot in the shade for three-four days and keep watering regularly.
After a few days you can put the plants in the sun again. Keep in mind that stevia plants need sunlight to grow. Apart from this, you can give organic liquid manure or Jeevamrut to the plants. If you want to protect the plants from pests, you can spray neem oil in between. In six-seven months, the plants become so big that you can use their leaves. So what is the delay, find stevia seeds around you today and plant this medicinal plant in your home.
