The Academic Council of Delhi University has approved to hold entrance test for undergraduate courses from the next session 2022-23. DU is all set to implement the Common Entrance Test (CET) for UG courses next year. However, some AC members protested saying that holding of common entrance exam would give a boost to the coaching institute. Apart from this, the AC meeting also approved the proposal to start B.Tech courses in DU. But 18 out of 26 elected AC members opposed the introduction of BTech courses, saying that these courses should not be started on loan. Apart from this, AC has also given its approval for setting up of Institute of Nano Science. After approval in AC, now these proposals will be placed in the Executive Council on December 17.
The Academic Council has approved the proposal to hold UG admission in DU on the basis of entrance exam next year. AC member Mithuraj Dhusia says that this will bring a lot of difficulties for the students, as the coaching institute will get a boost and it will be difficult for the students of poor section.
AC member Alok Pandey says, there will be a negative impact on the education of poor children and especially girls because their parents will now have to arrange money for the coaching institute. AC member Dr. Chandramohan Negi says, where there will be more coaching centers, only the children of that place will get the benefit. Students will be judged by the entrance of three hours, which will also reduce the meaning of school education. Children’s mental stress will increase due to entrance.
Starting the new department under the Faculty of Technology from the next session, AC has also approved three B.Tech courses. However, 17 out of 26 AC members have also opposed it. Proposing to start B.Tech course in DU, Delhi University has placed a demand of Rs 100 crore in four years before the UGC. AC members said that if this amount does not form part of the annual grant of the UGC, then these courses should not be started on loan (from HEFA). He said that the UGC has not sanctioned the grant of 100 crores and has not sanctioned faculty and non-teaching posts.
