- Congress got tremendous success in the elections held for 15 urban bodies
- Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel told the victory of the people’s faith in the government
- Congress’s internal strife is also likely to weaken with the victory
Not only has the BJP got a setback due to the impressive performance of the ruling Congress Party in the elections for 15 urban bodies in Chhattisgarh, the internal discord within the Congress is also likely to be put to a halt. Difficulties have increased for the State Health Minister TS Singhdev, who is claiming the Chief Minister’s post over the alleged formula of two and a half years of CM, as it will not be easy to challenge Bhupesh Baghel by winning the urban body elections after increasing closeness with the Congress high command. .
Congress infighting was at its peak about four months ago. In the month of September, the chair of CM Baghel was seen in danger. Health Minister TS Singhdeo was continuously putting pressure on the party leadership regarding the alleged formula of two and a half years for the post of CM. The era of show of strength had started in front of the high command and the possibility of change of leadership in the state was gaining momentum. After the victory of the Congress in the municipal elections, the immediate prospects of the threat to Baghel’s chair have ended. At the same time, it is also being speculated that what will be the next step of Singhdev.
For the BJP, which has been in power for 15 consecutive years in the state, the results of the urban body elections are nothing short of a shock. Since coming to power in 2018, the Congress has also won by-elections in three assembly seats. After the urban body results, BJP leaders have also started to believe that the party needs to introspect. The party is now working on a strategy to adopt a more aggressive approach against the Congress government.
On the other hand, Congress is calling it a victory of its government’s programs and Bhupesh Baghel’s leadership. State Congress President Mohan Markam has said that people from Bastar to Surguja have reposed faith in the party. It clearly means that people are satisfied with the Congress rule.
In the results of the urban body elections on Thursday, the Congress got victory in all the six Nagar Panchayats. It has also got absolute majority in four out of five municipalities and two out of four municipal corporations. In the two municipal corporations where the majority did not get, there is also a possibility of getting the post of mayor with the help of independents. Bhupesh Baghel is already making efforts to increase his closeness with the central leadership of the party and has been successful to a large extent in this. The BJP doesn’t seem to be in a position to challenge him. Baghel’s real concern was about Singhdev, but after this victory, he can remain unconcerned about it for the time being.
