New Delhi. The government today decided to expand and speed up COVID vaccination in view of the infection of the new variant of the corona virus, Omicron, and decided to vaccinate children in the age group of 15 to 18 years, frontline workers including health workers and elderly people suffering from other diseases. Precaution dosage will be started from January.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made this announcement in a surprise address to the nation tonight after a special meeting called to review the situation. Children in the age group of 15 to 18 years will be vaccinated from January 3 and for frontline workers, elderly people from January 10.

Prime Minister Modi said that the infection of the new variant of Corona, Omicron, is increasing in many countries of the world. In India too, many people have been found to be infected with Omicron. I would urge all of you not to panic. Be careful and alert. Remember these things to wash the mask and hands after a while. The experience of fighting the corona global epidemic so far shows that following all the guidelines at the individual level is a great weapon to combat corona. And the second weapon is vaccination.

He said that India started giving the vaccine to its citizens from January 16 this year. It is the collective effort and collective will of all the citizens of the country that today India has crossed the unprecedented and very difficult target of 141 crore vaccine doses. Today, more than 61 percent of India’s adult population has received both doses of the vaccine. Similarly, about 90 percent of the adult population has been given a single dose of the vaccine.

He said, “The children who are between the age of 15 years to 18 years, now vaccination will start in the country. In 2022, on 3rd January, it will be started from Monday. In this way the worry of children of this age group going to schools, colleges and their parents will be removed.
He said that we all have experience that those who are corona warriors, healthcare and frontline workers, they have a huge contribution in keeping the country safe in this fight. They still spend a lot of their time in the service of corona patients: therefore, as a precaution, the government has decided that the vaccine will also be administered to healthcare and frontline workers. It will be started in 2022, on January 10, Monday.

The Prime Minister said that citizens who are above 60 years of age with comorbidities i.e. diabetes and other diseases, on the advice of their doctor, the option of vaccine dosage will be available to them also. This too will be available from January 10.

He said, “I urge that rumours, fears, attempts to create confusion should be avoided. We are running the world’s largest vaccination campaign. It has to expand and accelerate.”
