Several cases of murders and sexual assault were reported during the post-poll violence in Bengal. The CBI is investigating these allegations and the Kolkata High Court itself is monitoring the CBI investigation. During investigation, the CBI found that out of the list of rape cases sent by the National Human Rights Commission, no evidence of rape or attempt to rape women has been found in 21 cases.
The NHRC report lists 64 alleged incidents of rape and attempt to rape. The CBI in its status report to the court on Monday said that they have registered 39 cases and are probing four others. 21 have been sent back to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Bengal Police for lack of evidence.
Chargesheet filed in first 10 cases
The agency said that due to lack of evidence, two murder cases were also sent back to the SIT. The CBI is probing 52 charges of murder or unnatural death related to the post-poll violence. The agency has already filed charge sheets in 10 cases while 38 more cases are under various stages of investigation.
The NHRC had reported 59 killings, of which 29 were admitted by the state government. The CBI probe began on August 19, with the SIT set up under the supervision of a retired judge to probe other criminal cases.
Mamata Banerjee government’s petition in Supreme Court
A five-judge bench headed by former Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal also directed the NHRC, the state government and all other commissions or committees to file complaints of murder, rape or post-Bengal election violence to the CBI. Hand over. Challenging the HC order, the Bengal government had filed a petition in the Supreme Court on September 1.
Bengal election results came on May 2
The report of the eight-phased elections was announced on May 2. The allegations of rape and murder came to the fore after the Trinamool Congress’s landslide victory. Several rights-working bodies, including the NHRC and the National Commission for Women, sent different teams to investigate. The Trinamool has repeatedly opposed the allegations and accused the bodies of being BJP teams.
1650 complaints out of 5000
The seven-member NHRC committee had claimed to have received around 1,650 complaints involving around 5,000 victims. 75 complaints related to atrocities on women were registered in NCW alone. The state police had informed the NHRC about 12 complaints of rape and alleged rape. A division bench of Chief Justice Prakash Srivastava and Justice Kesang Doma Bhutia will hear the matter again on January 24.
