Voting is going on in the by-election of Bhawanipur assembly seat, a high profile seat of West Bengal. In this seat, CM Mamata Banerjee is the candidate from TMC, while Priyanka Tibrewal is the candidate from BJP. This election is very important for Mamata Banerjee as she needs the membership of the Legislative Assembly to remain the Chief Minister. She had lost the election from Nandigram. There is a tough competition between the two.
Slow polling in Bhawanipur
Voting is being held for by-elections in three West Bengal seats – Bhawanipur, Samserganj and Jangipur. Voting is being held here amid tight security arrangements. In Samserganj and Jangipur, where the voting percentage in the first two hours is looking decent, it is progressing at a very slow pace in Bhawanipur. After voting started at 7 am, only 7.57 per cent votes have been cast till 9 am, while 17.51 per cent votes have been cast in Jangipur and 16.32 per cent in Samserganj till 9 am.

Strict watch on the security of EVMs
Violence was witnessed during the election campaign in Bhawanipur, in such a situation the security has been tightened. The Mamata government was constantly being accused of misuse of power by the BJP. For the security of EVMs in the other two seats including Bhawanipur, special vehicles have also been deployed and the security of the booth has been given in the hands of the police.
BJP accuses TMC of wrongdoing
The news of disturbances is coming to the fore between the voting being held in Bhawanipur. BJP’s Priyanka Tibrewal has made serious allegations against TMC. Priyanka Tibrewal says that TMC MLA Madan Mitra has forcibly closed the voting machine, an attempt is being made to capture the booth. Because if people cast their votes, they will not get the result of their choice.
Section 144 up to 200 meters of polling stations
As part of security arrangements, prohibitory orders under section 144 of CrPC have been imposed within 200 meters of polling stations. A large number of security forces have been deployed in Bhawanipur. Rapid response teams have also been deployed here. The security outside the booth here is with the Kolkata Police, which has put up barricades at 38 places in the constituency. Security has also been beefed up in Jangipur and Samserganj seats.
