Farming is often called a loss-making deal. In such a situation, many farmers do not want their son to become a farmer. But today we are telling you the story of a young farmer who chose farming instead of his father’s hardware business. Not only this, Mayur Prajapati of Deesa (Gujarat) has done a turnover of 45 lakhs from his farming within just three years.
Mayur, who has always been interested in agriculture, has studied B.Sc Agriculture. In the last year of his studies, he started farming. Today, along with farming, he is also running an excellent hi-tech nursery. Where he prepares plants of seasonal vegetables in optimum temperature, which farmers buy and plant in their fields. By doing this, he not only helps the farmers to prepare the crop on time, but he himself is also earning good profits.
The Better India He says, “Most farmers assume that new experiments in farming result in losses. They are also afraid of adopting the scientific method or planting a new crop. But I joined agriculture like any other business and now I am doing new things. Along with this, I am also teaching new techniques and new things to other farmers.
started farming from one acre
Mayur’s father was not interested in farming, so he gave his ancestral land to others for contract farming. But before the end of his studies in the year 2018, Mayur started cultivating vegetables on about one bigha of land. He grew vegetables like bitter gourd and truffle by making a frame above the ground. This also improved pollination in the fields, as well as greatly protected against diseases and pests. In the end the quality of the crop was also very good. In this way from one bigha to five bigha and then gradually he started farming on a large scale.
He says, “Farmers keep full hope on a single crop, whereas if we do multilayer farming, then the chances of loss will be reduced. That’s why I grow many vegetables at once. If the price of one crop is not available, then the loss is compensated by the other.
In addition, they started growing crops keeping in mind the market demand and the season. Giving an example, he explains that potato cultivation is the highest in Deesa. In such a situation, if all the farmers grow only potatoes, then due to high production, the price will also be low. In such a situation, for the experiment, Mayur planted capsicum plants in some part of the field along with potatoes. Simultaneously, by doing multi-cropping, he cultivated melon and watermelon and it also benefited him immensely.
At present, he is doing farming and nursery business by renting 70 bighas of land.
How did the idea of opening a nursery come about?
About two years ago, the saplings brought in from outside began to face many difficulties in growing them in the field. He noticed that many types of diseases get caught in saplings. After planting the plants in the field, they face many challenges in growing them. Peacock felt that like me, other farmers must also have to face these problems. Then the thought of setting up a hi-tech nursery came to his mind. He says, “In other nurseries the plants are raised in a greenhouse, under a kind of controlled condition. Whereas we plant saplings in our nursery with a white net. Due to the white web, the plants get natural temperature and farm-like environment.”
From this nursery, peacocks grow and give plants of the second crop to the farmers till their first crop is ready. So that he can earn good profit by selling his crop on time.

help other farmers
Amit Prajapati, a young farmer from Deesa, cultivates by taking saplings from Peacock’s nursery. Although Amit is an engineer by profession, he has been associated with agriculture for three years because of his interest in farming. He told, “I have been buying saplings from their nursery for the last one year. The cost of the plants brought from here is about 40 paise less than other nurseries, while the quality is also very good. The reason for which is that here the plants are prepared in the same natural condition as we do in the field. He also pays close attention to the proper development of the plants.”
Two years ago, when Amit used to bring saplings from another nursery, only 500 out of 1000 saplings could be planted in the field, whereas now after planting in the field, about 900 saplings survive comfortably.

Amit has bought five thousand papaya saplings this year along with 50 thousand chillies, two lakh cauliflower, brinjal and tomato from Mayur’s MK nursery. Not only this, Amit told that he has also done multi-farming in the field by taking the advice of Peacock. He has planted cabbage using the space between two papaya plants.
Like Amit, currently more than 500 farmers from Gujarat and Rajasthan are buying saplings from Mayur’s nursery. Mayur is also working on giving farmers a better platform to sell their crops in the coming days.
