MS Swaminathan, the father of India’s ‘Green Revolution’, died in Chennai on the morning of Thursday 28 September at the age of 98. He is survived by his wife Meena and three daughters Soumya, Madhura and Nitya. Swaminathan played a key role in developing high-yielding varieties of rice, which helped ensure that India’s low-income farmers produced more crops.
Scientist Swaminathan died at the age of 98 due to prolonged illness. Sources in the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation said that the renowned agricultural scientist was being treated for age-related illness for a long time. Swaminathan leaves behind three daughters.
Important role in promoting paddy
Swaminathan played an important role in promoting paddy crop in the country. He made a major contribution in developing high yielding varieties of paddy. Due to this initiative, farmers of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh got a lot of help.
Had held many important posts
Swaminathan held many prominent positions during his tenure. He was appointed Director of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (1961–1972), Director General of ICR and Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (1972–79), Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture (1979–80). Swaminathan was appointed Prime Minister in 1987. Food prize was given. He has been honored with Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.

PM Modi also felt sad after hearing the news of Swaminathan’s demise. The PM said that he always worked for the country. The PM said that Swaminathan improved the lives of thousands of people by doing unprecedented work in the agriculture sector.
