Most of us do not understand the pain of others until we ourselves go through difficult situations in life. Humans can still ask for help by speaking for their needs, but few people come forward for the helpless animals. Today we are going to tell you about a family of Jammu, who is serving the pain of these innocent injured animals as their pain and serving them for the last 28 years.

The Hakhu family living in Hakkal village of Jammu had to leave their home in Kashmir and settle in Jammu due to adverse circumstances. Today, this family with a special attachment to animals is running a shelter home for animals at their home.

The Hakhu family, from 1993 to 2018, used to do this work at their own expense, but sometime back they have formed their own trust, through which they now get help from other people. At present, his shelter home serves more than 300 sick and injured animals.

40-year-old Namrata Hakhu is doing the work of serving animals along with her father Rajendra and mother Urmila Hakhu. Namrata has the better India Told to me, “I feel the pain of these animals as my own. I learned to love animals from my mother.”

Namrata’s grandfather was a doctor by profession and her father used to run a medicine shop. In September 1989, there was a terrorist attack on the BSF camp located near the medicine shop of Rajendra Hakhu. The initial treatment of the soldiers injured in the attack was done by Rajendra. Namrata told that after that incident, her father started getting threatening calls from terrorists asking her to leave Kashmir. Later on the terrorists kidnapped his father. Recalling those days, Namrata recounts, “When they took my father, we thought we had lost him but we were lucky that after getting some people treated, the terrorists left my father. After this incident, we left Kashmir in December 1989.”

The Hakhu family owned 1600 square feet of land in Jammu. At that time Namrata was only 10 years old and her brother was younger than her.

Journey started with Benz and Bravo

In Jammu, Rajendra Hakhu started doing odd jobs on commission basis and got both the children admitted in a school in Jammu. But coming here he realized that the attitude of people towards animals, especially dogs, is not good. Whereas the Haku family has always been an animal lover. Says Namrata, “In 1993, my mother had given shelter to an injured dog at home. My brother had also brought a dog home from somewhere. We named them both Benz and Bravo. Both of them stayed with us for more than 15 years.

Namrata tells that her parents used to see injured animals on the road, then they used to get involved in their service. He gave shelter to some animals at his house. Since there was no boundary wall in his house, many animals also used to run away. After this he built the boundary wall in 1997 and these animals got shelter.

The biggest reason for making the boundary wall in the house was that the injured and weak animals did not have to wander here and there for food. Apart from this, they also feed on roadside animals.

    Not married to serve animals

Says Namrata, “We have 20 dogs right now, while some animals are kept outside our door. At the same time, some people leave their dogs with us after saying three or four days and never come to pick them up. At present they have chickens, cats, pigs, bulls, eagles, monkeys and 340 dogs. He told that he has 50 such dogs, which cannot even walk.

In the year 2018, Namrata and her family felt that this was not our work alone. Hoping for some help from the people, he got an organization registered in the year 2018 by the name of Hakhoo Street Animals Foundation Trust.

Namrata deposited the money from the computer center and her mother sold all her jewelry for this purpose. “To meet the medical and food requirements of these animals, we also took loans from different places, which is around Rs 10 lakh,” Namrata said.

In this shelter home, animals are given food three times a day, vaccines and medicines etc. from time to time. At present, the only source of income for the Hakhu family is the Migrant Relief Fund from the government. Under this, he gets Rs 9,750 every month.
