In the report, 131 countries have been assessed on the basis of pollution of 2022. According to the report, 19 of the world’s 20 most polluted cities are in Asia, of which 14 are Indian cities. 39 of the top 50 polluted cities are from India. The most polluted city in India was Bhiwadi in Rajasthan. Delhi has been the most polluted among the metros. New Delhi ranks second among the polluted capitals. It was the most polluted in the year 2021.
About 60% of India’s cities have pollution levels seven times higher than WHO standards. In the year 2022, there has been some decline in PM2.5, the unit of measurement of air pollution in India. Its level was 53.3 micrograms / cubic meter. This is slightly less than in 2021 (58.1 µg/cubic meter). In the year 2022 itself, India changed the target of the National Clean Air Program and had talked about reducing pollution by 40% by 2026.

Avinash Chanchal, campaign manager of Greenpeace India, says that air pollution is a big threat to India. The government needs to take concrete steps immediately to reduce it. Strict rules are needed to reduce pollution caused by industries and vehicles. Along with this, the government needs to invest in the public transport system.
