Till now 1.5 crore people have not filed tax return, consider it fixed to increase the last date for filing ITR!

ITR Filing Last Date: Now only a few days are left before the last date for filing ITR is 31st December. This date has been extended twice, but looking at the figures, it looks like it will need to be extended once again. The number of people who have filed income tax returns for the financial year 2020-21 has crossed 4.51 crore till December 26. A total of 5.95 crore returns were submitted for the financial year 2019-20. In such a situation, some tax experts believe that this date may be extended once again. Let us know why the experts feel like this.

How many people paid tax from which section?

According to the Income Tax Department, of the income tax returns filed till December 26, 2.44 crore returns are ITR-1 Form (Sahaj), while 1.12 crore returns are ITR-4 Form (Sugam). Sahaj and Sugam forms are used for returns of small and medium taxpayers. The Sahaj form can be used by individual taxpayers with an annual income of up to Rs 50 lakh. Taxpayers earning salary and residential property are required to fill up the Sahaj form. On the other hand, through the Sugam form, income tax returns can be submitted by individual taxpayers, Hindu undivided families and those with business income up to Rs 50 lakh.

Very few ITRs filed as compared to last year

If compared to last year, very few people have filed income tax returns this year. According to a tweet of the Income Tax Department dated 11 January 2021, a total of 5.95 crore ITRs were filed for the financial year 2019-20. Last year, the last date for filing ITR was January 10. If we talk about this year, till 26 December 2021, only 4.51 crore ITRs have been filed. That is, about 1.44 crore ITRs are yet to be filed. Around 1 crore people have filed ITR in the last 10 days alone. Looking at the figures, it does not seem possible that in just 5 days, about 1.5 crore ITR can be filed. In such a situation, consider the extension of the last date to file ITR fixed.

Therefore the last date for filing ITR may increase

It is believed that if about 1.44 crore ITRs are filed in just 5 days, then this can lead to all kinds of problems on the website. In such a situation, people may face difficulty in filing ITR. After the launch of the new Income Tax website, complaints of irregularities kept coming in it for several months and still there are occasional complaints about one or the other error. In such a situation, it is expected that this time also the last date for filing income tax return can be extended and it can be done till January 10.

Last year was also extended last date

If we talk about last year, then the last date for filing income tax return was first extended from July 31 to November 30 and then it was extended to December 31. However, when the government felt that still many people had not filed ITR, the last date for filing ITR was extended to January 10. This time also it can be extended at least till January 10, the last date.
