Sleep is such a need of a person that if it is not fulfilled then nothing seems right around. Sleep accounts for a quarter to a third of a person’s life. If you haven’t slept for 1 day, then on the second day everything seems useless to you. It is difficult to understand many things. Which clearly means that there is a deep relationship between sleep and the brain.
Getting less sleep means that we have trouble understanding many things. Whatever we learned or studied throughout the day, it is difficult to remember it for a long time. When you sleep, your brain expels waste products, which do not work well when you are awake. Apart from the mind, sleep is essential for the whole body. When you do not get enough sleep, many health problems start.
Apart from this, if you do not give sleep properly, then it also affects your immunity. Slowly your body starts getting weak. Diseases and infections increase. Sleep plays an important role in metabolism, not sleeping well even a night can lead to a condition like prediabetic in a healthy person.
Dr. Pankaj Agarwal, Senior Consultant Neurologist and Movement Disorders Specialist at Global Hospital, Mumbai, says that lack of sleep has a negative effect on your brain in many ways. When you don’t get good sleep of 7 to 8 hours a day, then your concentration and memory are not as sharp as it is after strong sleep.
Sleep deprivation makes it difficult for brain cells to communicate effectively with each other, leading to temporary mental lapses that affect memory and visual perception.
Seizures due to lack of sleep are common in people with epilepsy, and for these patients, sleep is a medicine in itself. A comfortable environment for a sound sleep, use of blinds/curtains, watch next to the bed, avoiding caffeine or alcohol just before bed can prove to be helpful.
