In India, the amount of chemical in ground water is very high, so in most places ground water is no longer potable but now arsenic is affecting food items. This has been revealed in a study by the British Council and the Union Ministry of Science. The study has been done on the state Bihar. Where arsenic is entering the food chain through irrigation water in villages in Bihar and has a negative effect on the body of the eater. And arsenic has been found in potatoes.

Arsenic level rising in the district

According to a study, arsenic levels in 22 out of 38 districts in the state are more than the World Health Organization’s (WHO) permissible limit of 10 µg/l. Giving information, Board Chairman Ashok Kumar Ghosh said that in our study the presence of arsenic in the food chain in Bihar through irrigation water has been found. Three common food items – rice, wheat and potatoes – have high levels of arsenic, putting people at risk of diseases. However, the report does not say anything about the adulteration of arsenic in drinking water in Bihar.

No claim on drinking water yet

Till now arsenic was not present in irrigation water, but the study has confirmed that arsenic is reaching the food chain of Bihar through irrigation water. Ashok Ghosh said that we are constantly checking the presence of arsenic in all groundwater. Irrigation water was still untouched. But our study has confirmed the presence of arsenic in the food chain in Bihar through irrigation water. The reason behind this is being told to less deep tube wells. Most of the fields are irrigated through shallow tube wells 30-70 feet deep. Citing the study, rice, wheat and potato have high levels of arsenic which can increase the disease burden on infected persons, he said. Arsenic levels are at risk in 19 villages in Bihar. According to research, eating foods containing high arsenic increases the chances of getting cancer. Apart from this, skin diseases such as keratosis, melanosis and bowen can also occur.
