New Delhi. People are commonly seen talking about the negative effects of smartphone use, but recently researchers have found that teens spending time on their phones or online is not that bad for mental health.
“Contrary to popular belief that smartphones and social media are having a negative impact on young men and women’s mental health, we don’t see much support for the idea that phones and social media are having a negative impact on young people’s mental health,” said Michelin Jensen, assistant professor at the University of North Carolina Time spent online is associated with an increased risk of mental health problems.
For a study published in the journal Clinical Psychological Science, researchers tested more than 2,000 teens between the ages of 10 and 15.
The researchers collected reports of mental health-related symptoms of these teens three times a day, along with reports of the amount of time they spent on the phone or online each day.
When these reports were later looked at, the researchers found that excessive use of digital technology was not associated with poor mental health.
The researchers said that the youth who reported sending more text messages in the report felt better than the youth who sent fewer messages.
Advising against excessive use of technology, experts stressed on using it responsibly.
According to Samir Parekh, psychologist and director of Fortis Mental Health Program in Noida, a youth’s life should be well balanced with indoor and outdoor activities and a balance between studies and fun is very important.
He told IANS, “TV, internet, social media should be used in limit and it should never overwhelm talking to friends, family time, sports or studies. There should be a balance between them. It is good to use the phone to talk to friends, but students should also give importance to talking to friends face to face.
He further said, “Social media can be used to express thoughts in a positive way. Along with this, children should be aware of certain skills to deal effectively with social media.
The elders should be a better role model and help them in shaping the overall lifestyle of the children.
