New Delhi. Diabetes ie sugar disease is spreading rapidly in the country and it is emerging as a major health problem. In such a situation, the government is paying special attention to develop Ayurvedic medicines for diseases in which allopathic medicine is not proving effective. World Diabetes Day (14 November) is also a time to review preparedness to deal with the disease. While the government is promoting alternative medicine in a big way across the country, various government research agencies are emphasizing on developing modern medicines based on Ayurveda and medicinal herbs.
These include the latest efforts of the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) and the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIAMP), two laboratories of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Together they have developed an Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of diabetes named BGR-34. It has been found to be effective in the management of type-2 diabetes.
It has been told in a statement that the effectiveness of this modern medicine made from Ayurvedic formula has been proven on the basis of scientific assessment. This medicine is used as a complementary medicine in the treatment of severe patients of this disease. A study published in the scientific research publication Traditional and Complementary Medicine also found BGR-34 to be effective in reducing the risk of heart attack in diabetic patients by 50 percent.
Former NBRI scientist A.K.S. Rawat says, this medicine has been prepared from many medicinal plants. These include Giloy, Fenugreek, Daruharidra, Vijaysar, Majith, Methika and Gudmar. They are considered to reduce the effect of diabetes and balance the amount of sugar in the blood. Various studies have proven that they help manage blood sugar and control cholesterol. (IANS)
