    Covid-19 antibody gives permanent immunity

New York. A new research has revealed that antibodies developed in patients’ bodies after being infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for Covid-19, persist for several months. The proof of this is the growth of the patient’s body. To get the facts published in the journal Immunity, a research team led by an Indian-origin researcher in the US studied the production of antibodies from samples of about 6,000 people.

Research author Deepa Bhattacharya from the University of Arizona in the US said, “We are clearly seeing high-quality antibodies still being produced five to seven months after SARS-CoV-2 infection.”

When a virus first infects cells, the immune system produces short-lived plasma cells, which immediately produce antibodies to fight the virus. Those antibodies appear in the blood within 14 days of infection.

The second stage of the immune response involves the creation of long-lived plasma cells, which produce high-quality antibodies that confer a lasting immunity.

The research team tracked antibody levels over several months on people who had been infected with COVID-19.

They found that SARS-CoV-2 antibodies have been present in blood tests for at least five to seven months, although they believe immunity lasts much longer.

Previously, research was conducted on additional antibody production from early infections, which found that antibody levels drop quickly after infection and provide short-term immunity.

The research team believes that those findings focused on short-lived plasma cells and failed to take into account long-lived plasma cells and the antibodies they produced.

Bhattacharya said, the infected persons we studied were infected in the last seven months back, so this is the longest period, in such a situation, we can confirm immunity.

Bhattacharya further said, “We know that people who were previously infected with SARS coronavirus, which is a virus similar to SARS-CoV-2, are showing immunity even after 17 years of infection. (IANS)
