First of all it is necessary to understand whether there is any truth in this and if so, why is it so? But before knowing the answer to the question, you need to understand what is cardiac arrest? It is a condition where the heart stops beating, and when this happens, essential organs do not receive oxygenated blood, which threatens death.
Why does heart attack happen? A heart attack is a condition in which a part of the heart stops receiving oxygenated blood due to a sudden clot in a blood vessel that supplies blood to that part of the heart. Because of both, a person can die.
11% risk of heart attack and cardiac arrest in the bathroom
In an interview given to an online media Dr Nityanand Tripathi, Director, Department of Cardiology and Electrophysiology at Fortis Hospital, Delhi reported that most people spend an average of 30 minutes or 2% of their time in the toilet every day. This is where the risk of heart attack or cardiac arrest ranges from 8 to 11 percent. Since bathrooms are private spaces, it leads to late detection and poor results.
Why does the attack come in the bathroom?
According to the doctor, there is a decrease in blood pressure during stress due to an imbalance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic nervous systems. This reduces blood flow to the brain and leads to loss of consciousness. This can lead to a sudden heart attack and cardiac arrest in the toilet.
Keep these things in mind if you want to avoid attack
- Do not exert too much force while defecating or urinating. Take your time feeling relieved.
- Avoid drinking very hot or very cold water. Do not start pouring water directly on the head. Begin by washing the feet or shoulders and gradually move up.
- Avoid exposure to cold environments in the bathroom, especially in winter, as it can lead to a heart attack.
- If you have had a heart attack before, are old, or have poor pumping power, do not close the door when using the toilet.
- Toilets/bathrooms used by vulnerable people should have alarms, so that timely help can be provided.
Other causes of bathroom attacks
The doctor says it could be because of being sick, going to the bathroom for nausea/vomiting and falling there. A big reason for this can be bathing because bathing with very hot or cold water can affect the heart rate, blood pressure and blood flow.
