1. Bacterial Vaginosis
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is one of the main causes of vaginal odor. Many women sometimes experience this after intercourse. However it is not a sexually transmitted infection (STI). In addition to vaginal odor, BV also causes itching and a thin white, brown, yellow, or greenish discharge. It is relatively common, but it should be treated as soon as possible because it increases the chances of other genital infections and STIs. BV during pregnancy increases the likelihood of premature rupture of membranes, premature labor, and postpartum infection (eg, chorioamnionitis and endometritis). For this, the doctor prescribes antibiotics and suggests a topical solution to reduce the associated symptoms.
2. Trichomoniasis or other STIs
If you suffer from an STI like trichomoniasis, this could potentially be a major cause of vaginal odor. It is also known as “trich”. This occurs when a protozoan parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis is transmitted during intercourse. This can happen to anyone. This causes symptoms such as itching in the genitals and pain and burning during urination. Do not try to treat it at home and see a doctor. If ignored, it can lead to serious complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or premature birth if you are pregnant.

3. Excessive sweating
Sweating is the body’s way of cooling itself down when it is hot. Sweating is common when engaging in vigorous activity as well as under stress or anxiety. When there is sweat in the vaginal area, there is an odor there. For this, things like improvement in hygiene, panties made of natural fabric can be adopted and sweat control can be done. If the smell becomes excessive, then you must contact your doctor.
4. Unhealthy Diet
If your natural pH level is in balance, you are less likely to have bad breath. Your diet can affect this balance either positively or negatively. Keep your diet healthy and add fruits, vegetables and pulses full of vitamins and minerals to it.
5. Lack of cleanliness
If you have a foul smell from your vagina without any discharge and/or itching, you can get rid of it by keeping the private part clean and dry. Odor from the vagina is also due to not cleaning the vaginal area properly.
- To clean the vagina, do the following:
- Wiping from front to back after urinating and defecating
- urinating after intercourse, so that bacteria can wash out
- changing your underwear once a day (or more if you sweat a lot)
- Using an odorless detergent to wash your underwear
- Take a bath with a gentle cleanser.
