New Delhi. Legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar has condoled the death of legendary batsman Yashpal Sharma, a member of the 1983 World Cup winning team. Sachin said that Yashpal’s contribution to Indian cricket will always be remembered. In his tweet, Sachin said, “Shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of Yashpal Sharma ji. Watching him bat during the 1983 World Cup is fresh memories. His contribution to Indian cricket will always be remembered. To the entire Sharma family.” My heartfelt condolences to you.
Sachin must have been 9 years old when Yashpal was playing for India in the 1983 World Cup. He was learning the tricks of cricket and during this time he loved watching every batsman who was technically sound and contributed to the team.
Sharma suffered a heart attack on Tuesday after returning from his morning walk and collapsed around 7.30 am. At this time he breathed his last.
The right-handed batsman, who was the backbone of India’s middle order in the 1983 World Cup, played 37 Test matches, scoring 1606 runs and scoring 883 runs in 42 ODIs. He also played 160 first-class matches representing Punjab, Haryana and Railways and scored 8933 runs.
But he is best remembered internationally for his performance in India’s first World Cup victory in 1983. He was the second highest run-scorer for India in the tournament after captain Kapil Dev. Yashpal scored 240 runs in the World Cup at an average of 34.28.
Sharma had scored 89 (off 120 balls) in his first match of the 1983 World Cup to help India make 262/8 in their 34-run victory over West Indies. That win in Manchester gave India the confidence to move on and win the tournament. (IANS)
