Indore: India head coach Rahul Dravid has denied that his team is following the policy of different captains for different formats. The T20 careers of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul have been questioned ever since India’s semi-final exit from the T20 World Cup last year. All three have not played a T20 match since the World Cup semi-final against England in November last year. He was also out of the series against New Zealand and Sri Lanka.
After this, he is not even in the series against New Zealand this week. Hardik Pandya captained the T20 team in Rohit’s absence and is a strong contender to captain India in the T20 World Cup in 2024. Before the third ODI against New Zealand, Dravid said in response to a question, ‘I am not aware of this. (Different captains in different formats). You should ask the selectors that question but at the moment I don’t think so.
Earlier this month, Dravid himself had said that the Indian T20 team was going through a transition phase and needed to exercise restraint. Rohit, however, has said that he has not decided on his future in T20 cricket.
Rohit had said this month, ‘We have to play three T20s against New Zealand. Let’s see what happens after IPL. I have not decided on leaving the format. The Ranji Trophy quarter-finals are scheduled from January 31 and the practice camp for the Test series against Australia will begin on February 2. No member of the Indian team will be released to play the Ranji quarter finals.
Dravid said, ‘We wanted the boys to play but it was a difficult decision for us. We will not be able to drop any player but if there is a need for semi-finals or final after the start of the series and that player is not playing then we can think.
