This is how India’s stardom prevailed
Not to mention Sharjah’s reputation as a world-class cricket venue is surprising too, as it holds the Guinness World Records for hosting the maximum number of One Day Internationals (245) in a single venue. Sharjah also hosted the fifth Asia Cup for the second time in 1995, after a gap of 11 years. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh participated in that edition, with India winning its third consecutive and fourth Asia Cup.
Bukhatir and Sharjah have done a lot for Asian cricket apart from just playing hosts. They offered the stadium to the Afghanistan Cricket Board in 2010, which did not have the required turf facilities at the time. It is also thanks to this access to world-class facilities that they have been able to hone their skills and become full members of the ACC and ICC. Over the years, Afghanistan has hosted Pakistan and Australia in bilateral games in Sharjah and it is a matter of great pride that they will play Bangladesh in Sharjah on 30 August.
Bukhatir, who is considered the father of United Arab Emirates cricket and the founder of Sharjah Cricket Stadium, said that from August 27, the 15th Asia Cup will be held in Sharjah and Dubai. These 40 years have been very fruitful and I am glad that we are hosting again. The initiative started in 1984 has paid off and I see it as one of my most satisfying achievements.
Khalaf Bukhatir, CEO, Sharjah Cricket Stadium said, “Life has really come full circle and we are very excited to host the Asia Cup once again in 2022. Our stadium is globally renowned for breaking records, having the best fans and most exciting finishes and I think this tournament will be no different. The ongoing updation work in the stadium has been completed. Now see you soon for another big tournament in Sharjah.
The Asia Cup 2022 tournament will begin in the UAE from August 27 with Sri Lanka hosting it. There will be a qualifier with defending champions India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. The tournament will be played in double round-robin and knockout format. India and Pakistan will join the winner of the qualifiers in Group A, while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are placed in Group B. There will be a total of 13 matches during the tournament, with the final to be held in Dubai on 11 September.
