    New Delhi: Today is the 71st birthday of Vivian Richards, the most explosive batsman of his era. Born on March 7, 1952, in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbados, Richards led the Caribbean team to many victories under his captaincy. Vivian Richards is one of the few cricketers to have been given the title of ‘Sir’. He played for his country in both the Cricket and Football World Cups. In the 1974 FIFA World Cup, he showed his strength in the qualifying round for Antigua.

    Vivian Richards played an unbeaten inning of 189 in Manchester ODI against England. This record of defending the highest score in an innings in ODIs for the longest time still stands today. Pakistan’s Saeed Anwar came close to breaking his record. Anwar broke Richards’ record by scoring 194 against India on 21 May 1997 at Chennai. This record remained in the name of Pak opener for 12 years and nine months.
