New York. World No. 2 player Daniil Medvedev of Russia defeated world No. 1 player Novak Djokovic of Serbia to win the men’s singles title at the last Grand Slam US Open of the year here. Medvedev created history by defeating Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the final to win his first major title. With this defeat, Djokovic’s dream of completing a calendar slam remained unfulfilled.
Djokovic won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon titles this season, and if he had won the US Open, he would have become the first tennis player since Rod Laver in 1969 to complete a calendar slam.
However, Medvedev did not let Djokovic’s dream come true and won the title by defeating in the final. With this victory, Medvedev has become the third Russian tennis player after Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin to have the feat of winning a Grand Slam.
Djokovic is equal to Switzerland’s Roger Federer and Spain’s Rafael Nadal at 20 Grand Slams. He had a chance to win the US Open for a record 21st Grand Slam, which he lost with this defeat.
After the win, Medvedev said, “You never know whether you will be able to win a big title in your career or not.” I always knew that I had to give my best to do this.
“It’s a very pleasant feeling,” he said. This is my first Grand Slam. I don’t know how I will feel if I win the second or third Grand Slam. But this is my first title so I am very happy. It means a lot to me.
Medvedev had also reached the final of the US Open two years ago and had to face defeat at the hands of Nadal in a five-set match.
