India has won its first medal in Tokyo Olympics. Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won the silver medal in the women’s 49 kg weight category by lifting a total of 202 kg. Mira is the first Indian athlete to win a medal on the first day of the Olympics. Hou Jihui of China won the gold medal by lifting 210 kg. Indonesia’s Cantika Windi won the bronze.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh also had a live conversation with Mirabai. He has announced that a reward of Rs 1 crore will be given to Meera by the Manipur government. Biren Singh shared the online conversation on social media.
Expressing happiness, Biren Singh said that at the time when Mirabai won the medal, a meeting was going on with Home Minister Amit Shah with all the Chief Ministers of North East. China wins gold in women’s 10m air rifle
China won the first gold medal of the Tokyo Olympics. In the women’s 10m air rifle event, China’s Yang Qianan won the gold medal in the final with an Olympic record of 251.8 points. Russia’s Anastasia Galasina won silver and Switzerland’s Nina Christiansen won bronze. Indian shooters Elavenil Valarivan and Apurvi Chandela were eliminated in the qualification round itself.
Deepika-Praveen lost to Korean pair
In the quarter-finals of the Archery Mixed event, Deepika and Praveen Jadhav were defeated by the Korean pair 6-2. Korea won the first two sets and scored 4 points. In the third set, India tried to make a comeback by winning, but in the third set the Korean archers again won. Deepika finished ninth in the women’s singles ranking round with 663 points on the opening day of the Olympics on Friday. South Korea’s archers were on the first three positions in the ranking round. Korea’s Aan San came first with 680 points, Jang Minhye (677) second and Kang Zhi (675) third. Dipika, on the other hand, will clash with the 54th-placed Bhutanese archer Karma in the pre-quarterfinals.
Praveen was 31st in men’s singles
Among the archers in the men’s ranking round, Praveen Jadhav was 31st with 656 points, Atanu Das was 35th with 653 points and Tarundeep Roy was 37th with 652 points.
He finished ninth in the men’s team event.
Disappointing performance by Elavenil and Apurvi
Indian players disappointed in women’s qualification in 10m air rifle. Both Apurvi and Elavenil failed to qualify for the finals. Elavenil finished 16th with a score of 626.5 and Apurvi finished 36th with a score of 621.9.
Badminton: India’s Sai Praneeth lost to Israel’s Misha Zillmerman in the Group D match. The Israeli player defeated them 21-17, 21-15 in consecutive games.
Indian pair missed the semifinals in rowing, now hope for repechage round
In rowing, Indian pair of Arvind Singh and Arjun Jat Lal missed out on the semi-finals after finishing fifth in the heat of the men’s doubles sculls lightweight. Indian rowers clocked 6.40.33 minutes in Heat 2. The Indian pair will now enter the repechage round and claim for the bronze medal.

India’s only hope in judo, Sushila Devi, lost the first match itself. She was easily defeated by Eva Cernowicz of Hungary in the round of 32 match.
