The Indian hockey team performed commendably in the Olympics this year, during which a tweet came from the Prime Minister that the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award has been renamed as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. After which there was a lot of debate in this matter at one time, if someone found this step appropriate, then someone questioned the process of changing the name and said that on what basis the Center has taken this decision.
Let us tell you that even before this, a sports award was given in the name of Major Dhyan Chand, but the Prime Minister said in his tweet that on the request of the general public, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award will be renamed after Major Dhyan Chand. Soon thereafter, the Sports Ministry changed the name of the award. They do not have any proof of the request of ordinary citizens.
This information came to the fore when an RTI was filed against it, in which the Sports Ministry admitted that they did not receive any request from the common citizens, they did not get any request from the public to change the name of the award. Let us tell you that the letter written to the Prime Minister is sent to different ministry or department according to its subject, after that he redresses it.
According to a media report, before changing the name of the award, the ministry did not hold any meeting or meeting with the stakeholders, they only changed the name of the award based on a tweet by the Prime Minister. We can say that on the advice of the Prime Minister, the Sports Ministry changed the name of the award.
In the documents of this entire decision, only the pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tweets were present, only on the basis of these tweets the name of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award was changed. The officials of the Sports Ministry understood the problem when they saw the name of the already existing Major Dhyan Chand Khel Puraskar, so they decided that its name would also be changed.
