Melbourne. The flags of Russia and Belarus have been banned from the Australian Open following an off-court incident on the opening day.
Ukraine’s ambassador to Australia, Vasyl Miroshnichenko, called on organizers to take action after fans waved Russian flags in support of Camilla Rakhimova. Rakhimova was up against Katerina Bandel of Ukraine.
“I strongly condemn the public waving of the Russian flag against a Ukrainian player at the Australian Open today,” Miroshnichenko tweeted. I urge Tennis Australia to implement its fair flag policy with immediate effect.
Tennis Australia responded to Miroshnichenko’s demand by banning the Russian and Belarusian flags from Melbourne Park with immediate effect.
Tennis Australia had previously allowed fans to express their support for players from both countries if it did not cause disruption.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine the previous year, players from Russia and Belarus were not allowed to play under their flag in many sports, including tennis.
