Abu Dhabi: Former Zimbabwe cricketer Andy Flower, who is coaching the Gulf Giants franchise in the first season of ILT20, believes that 360-degree players like Suryakumar Yadav create a lot of problems for the bowlers and make them stray from their line and length. The 32-year-old Suryakumar has been in scintillating form and recently scored his third T20 century during the series against Sri Lanka in Rajkot.

He said, ‘360 degree players like Suryakumar are creating a lot of trouble for the bowlers. Fast bowlers may stray from their best length and the batsmen may scoop over the keeper or fine leg. We are also now seeing reverse sweep at short third man against fast bowlers. Joe Root is trying to hit that kind of shot here as well.

In recent times, many bigwigs of the game have been criticized for playing low strike in T20 cricket. Asked if there is room for players with such low strike rates in T20 cricket, Flower said that different players have a role to play but it depends on whether a coach and a captain want the team. “We all definitely like aggression, but I still think there is a role for different types of players. It is up to the selectors and the coach and the captain how they balance it. But of course aggressive batting is important, but there are different ways of scoring fast in cricket.

Apart from ILT20, 54-year-old Flower is also coaching Lucknow Supergiants in IPL. He also has assignments as a coach in various leagues around the world and is enjoying the challenge.
