Dubai . Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa believes that Suryakumar Yadav will be the X-factor in the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023. Also said that he is very happy for the stylish batsman, who is achieving tremendous success in white-ball cricket. The 32-year-old Suryakumar has been in scintillating form and recently scored his third T20 century during the series against Sri Lanka in Rajkot. However, despite his excellent form, he could not find a place in India’s squad for the first two ODIs against the island nation before becoming a part of the third match.
Uthappa, who is representing Dubai Capitals in the ILT20, told IANS: “In the upcoming World Cup, everyone can be an X-factor, but I think Suryakumar Yadav tops my list right now.” However, he did not play much in the ODI series against Sri Lanka.
“I definitely think the players who are getting regular chances are really feeling the pressure to keep performing because if they don’t perform, they can’t keep Surya out for long,” he said. .
The 37-year-old Uthappa feels that Surya is currently batting at a different level. He also highlighted some of the skills of the batsman which makes him special.
Surya is a multi-utility player, a very good timer of the ball and a match-winner, he said. He is batting at a different level this time and is the only batsman in that field at home as a teammate. I am very happy to play with him because he has worked really hard to reach this point in his career.”
Asked who should keep wicket for India in ODIs, Uthappa said that KL Rahul should continue in the role.
The former Indian cricketer said, KL Rahul has been doing really well with the bat at No.5 in ODIs and even keeping wickets well despite not being a full-time keeper. So, I think the team can back Rahul and when it comes to making a decision, it will be between Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan.”
Talking about the prospects of the future captain, Uthappa said that India have many possible leadership options going forward.
He said, look, there are many possible captaincy options for India. After Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya is certainly the front-runner at the top of the order but Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant could well lead the team further down the order.
Uthappa also spoke about the team environment at Dubai Capitals which has great players like Joe Root, Rovman Powell, Sikandar Raza and others.
