The Sports Ministry has canceled the Women’s National Wrestling Coaching Camp that was to begin in Lucknow from January 18. 41 women wrestlers, 13 coaches and support staff were to participate in this camp. The Sports Ministry has directed the Director, National Center of Excellence, Sports Authority of India, Lucknow, to provide all facilities to the women wrestlers who have already reached there for the camp, till they are in the camp.
Top wrestlers of the country, including Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Bajrang Punia and world championship medalist Vinesh Phogat, staged a protest on Wednesday against the dictatorial attitude of Wrestling Federation of India President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. He made a sensational allegation that the president and coach of the federation sexually exploit women wrestlers. Vinesh Phogat went so far as to weep alleging that Wrestling Federation of India President and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has been sexually abusing women wrestlers for many years. Singh, on the other hand, has denied the allegations leveled against him. He even said that he would hang himself if the allegations were proved to be true.
Olympian Vinesh Phogat also claimed that several coaches at the national camp in Lucknow have also exploited women wrestlers. He alleged that there are some women in the camp who approach wrestlers at the behest of the WFI president. However, the 28-year-old star wrestler clarified that she herself has not faced such abuse.
