BCCI President Sourav Ganguly feels that wives and girlfriends give stress. Ganguly made this comment during an event in Gurgaon recently. He was asked how he copes with the stress in his life. In response, Ganguly said in a joking tone, ‘There is no stress in life. Only wife and girlfriend give stress. Ganguly may have said this in laughter, but it seems that perhaps he is not properly aware of the condition of women in the country.
Recently the latest results of the National Family Health Survey have been released. In this survey, 18 states and union territories were surveyed. More than 30% of 14 of them justified beating at the hands of their husbands. Surprisingly, the number of men who justified the beating of wives turned out to be less than women.
There is no stress in life. Only wife and girlfriend give stress.

Ganguly getting trolled for his comment
The words of Ganguly are not being embraced by the people. Some people gave the title of ‘Desi Uncle’ to ‘Dada’ on social media. A user named Janvi wrote, ‘Sourav Ganguly is the most antagonistic Indian cricketer against women. I feel sorry for his wife and daughter. Some people even dragged BCCI secretary Jay Shah, with whom Ganguly is often seen, in the entire controversy.
These figures of NFHS may open Ganguly’s eyes
The reality is that Indian women are probably the most stressed. NFHS data show that the status of women in most of the households is second to none. When more than 30 percent of women in 14 of the 18 states surveyed justify beatings, imagine what the unofficial situation would be like.
In three states – Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka – more than 75% of women justified beating up the wives of men. To justify the beatings, respondents cited neglect of women’s homes or children or showing disrespect to in-laws as the main reasons.
How easy is it to raise a hand on a woman…
Ushashree, director of Hyderabad-based NGO ‘Roshni’, told our colleague ‘Times of India’ recently that cases of sexual abuse and domestic violence have increased during Covid-19. He said, ‘The tension between the family has increased and the number of calls coming to us has increased.’ In NFHS also, more than one reason has been given for beating of wives.
If the wife does not take care of the house or the children, then she gets beaten up. If she refuses sex with her husband, then she gets beaten up. If the food is not cooked properly then the beating… The society has decided how to behave with the women. If such crimes are to be stopped then women have to come out of this kind of thinking.
